The Mark

Lore Post Nocturnal Week 1

"Collected Folklore: The Crescent" by Bedivere Hyacinth

Folklore and legends of the distant past do make mention of a rune of great power, though the details are lost and fuzzy, stories changing ever through time with each retelling. Sometimes, a rune is found upon a necklace- a bracelet, or even a dagger. A mare, on the run from slavers, finds a magical amulet which grants her great power. The symbol reappears again in a later tale about a prince who creates a crown blessed with the symbol in order to save his kingdom. No surviving records that depict the appearance of the symbol exist.

The book also details a number of legends about princesses, demigod brothers of the wilderness and of civilization, bathing on roofs, and a magical talking bird that grants wishes.

"Lucien; A Biography" by Printpress

The clearest record of such a rune of power exists in biographical novels about the tyrannical General Lucien. The griffon famously helped expand the Griffish empire, while keeping several ponies as personal slaves. There is mention of a rune he had put upon his blade, in the belief it would grant him strength against his enemies. What the symbol itself looks like is left out of all records. "Lucien; A Biography" details less about his campaigns, and more about the griffon supremacist's love life, and the over 20 hippogriffs he fathered.

"Rule under One" by Anatola

At some point, the sword came into the possession of conqueror Ember Gild, until it was destroyed by Selene Pearl. Ember Gild was a mare who emerged from power, starting from demolishing griffon hold on the north-east of Equestria, who then began on a campaign to conquer the whole of Equestria under her banner. Her quest ended at the Crystal Empire, where she was slain.

"Baroque Pearl" by Finchwing

Selene Pearl re-purposed the sword's symbol into a channeling crystal she used to protect the Crystal Empire. For some years, Pearl ruled as a belevolent queen, until an excursion out into the snow for which she was gone for weeks. The queen who returned was not the same one who had left it. The mare quickly became a tyrant, until she was finally unseated in a rebellion- where her channeling crystal was destroyed, and records of the mark itself burned. This book contains far too much purple prose.
