Sam was originally from a small village within the Outland, a hot and unforgiving place- the tribe he was born into wanting to use them as one of their child soldiers. His mother refused to allow this to happen with her young colt, so under cover of night the two escaped the village. With miles and miles of nothing but sand, his mother realized the best way to ensure her child's safety was to slip her son into the wagon of the first traveler she came across. This was the last time he'd ever see his mother.
Once he was in Equestria, a witch doctor took him under his wing and began to teach Ceruisam the art of potion-making. It wasn't long until Sam earned his cutiemark due to the invention of his own paralyzing potion. His fame spread throughout Equestria of how he could cure nearly any illness or mend any broken bone. As an adult, Celestia asked for him to teach at SSSfGU, as "his work could help shape Equestria's future". He ended up taking the job and not long after, writing numerous volumes of potion making tomes and a memoir. These potion books can be found in the school library, almost every volume he's ever written being available save for one.
Ceruisam's final book, "the Mark of Evil" vanished along with him before any pony could read it. The stallion had disappeared the day of the Hall of Memories incident, leading to him being blamed for the tragedy- something Golden Virtue gladly went along with. Legends say Ceruisam went insane, and would someday return to the school to carry out whatever nefarious plot he'd set into motion all those years ago.
Return to Starswirls
1864
Ceruisam returned to the school, having taken the guise of Munsey Prigmore. He had hidden the reporter away in his lair in the Speculum Sanctum, and used polyjuice potion to move about the castle freely and gather information. Ceruisam attacked each common room, trying to gain access to any spirit that was tainted with the dark magic of the crown, and was thwarted by students at every turn.
Upon students finding Munsey and preventing him from capturing the house ghosts, Ceruisam resorted to impersonating Razzles and focusing on trying to capture the ghost of former Headmistress Echo Sounds. Students confronted Ceruisam in Thanatos' office, and again when rescuing Razzles from where Ceruisam had hidden her in the catacombs. Ceruisam was finally captured, and stored in an empty classroom until the police could carry him off.
Ceruisam insisted that there was no way to be able to track down Virtue without his help, but students rejected his offer. Whatever secret plans he held died with him when he was executed following the end of the semester, but his private journal remains- yet to be decoded.
